Joints contain cartilage and synovial fluid, both of which are shock absorbing and reduce friction during movement. Cartilage does not have its own blood supply and relies on healthy synovial fluid for its nutrition. During inflammation or other damage, joint cartilage and synovial fluid can be detrimentally affected, leading to a cascade of inflammation, degradation of cartilage and loss of synovial fluid.

eqmedic's equine supplement, synomedic+ helps to relieve articular pain, improve cartilage erosion and elasticity, using these constituents

AVOCADO-SOYBEAN UNSAPONIFIABLES (ASU)

ASU has been shown to improve joint health by stimulating the production of new cartilage whilst reducing the breakdown of existing cartilage. This applies to the collagen component of cartilage that provides the framework and also the larger molecules, glycosaminoglycans that give cartilage its shock-absorbing and friction-free properties.

This has been shown in a study at the Gail Holmes Equine Orthopaedic Research Centre at Colorado State University led by David Frisbie and the world renowned equine veterinary surgeon, Wayne McIlwraith. Synomedic plus+ uses the exact dose as recommended in this study and is one of the only joint supplements with this active ingredient included. ASU helps to decrease pain, inflammation and the need for joint medication with steroids or oral treatment with the likes of phenylbutazone (‘bute’) or meloxicam.

HYALURONIC ACID (HA)

Is a natural constituent of connective tissue, cartilage and synovial fluid, and is made up of glucuronic acid and N-acetylglucosamine. It has viscoelastic properties that help to lubricate the joint, reduce friction and aid energy dissipation.

METHYLSULFONYLMETHANE (MSM)

Is a biologically available source of sulphur and is vital for joints, tendons, cartilage and ligaments (all connective tissue). Its therapeutic properties come from its antioxidant activity and it also has anti-inflammatory effects and blocks inflammatory mediators in cartilage cells.

MARINE GLUCOSAMINE SULPHATE

Is used to build tendons, ligaments, cartilage and synovial fluid. It stimulates production of hyaluronic acid and glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) to enhance mobility and lubrication in joints and acts as a shock absorber, providing cushioning during movement.

Glucosamine inhibits chemical reactions that slowdown the breakdown of cartilage and reduces the production of pro-inflammatory mediators including nitric oxide, nuclear factor kappa B, prostaglandin E2, and degradative enzymes such as collagenase and aggrecanase. The synomedic+ range uses glucosamine sulphate of marine origin unlike many other brands which is more effective and has better absorption than glucosamine hydrochloride.

MARINE CHONDROITIN SULPHATE

Is a large complex molecule belonging to a group called glycosaminoglycans, and is found naturally in cartilage, skin and connective tissue. Its mode of action is to replace the proteoglycans in articular cartilage, which are lost in damage and/or inflammation, an anti-inflammatory effect and inhibition of enzymes involved in cartilage breakdown. Glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate have been shown in published equine cell research to work better in synergy than on their own.
